Service Design Summer course 2011

Service design refers to a creative methodology
used to improve or create better services.
Service designers use people-centred
approaches and co-design methods to create
meaningful user experiences and deliver
effective solutions. The #SDS11 course was an
introduction into the theory and practice of
service design and provided a safe learning
environment together with some real life context,
enabling participants to learn and experiment
while working on potential client briefs. The
participants worked both individually and in small
teams to rspond to three design challenges
and develop a service-based proposal, presented
to clients at the end of the course.

The course will suit creative professionals looking
to move into this emerging field as well as non-
designers working in the service industry, from
private to public or third sector. In fact, anyone
interested in creative problem solving
approaches and applied design thinking would
also benefit. The course has attracted in the
past an interdisciplinary mix of students and
professionals with different levels of expertise
and experience.

Bruno Taylor and Vincenzo Di Maria designed and
delivered the course. They are the co-founders
of commonground, where they work with public
and third sector organisations to deliver service
innovation by using design-led approaches. Bruno
and Vincenzo met while studying MA Industrial
Design at Central Saint Martins and collaborating
with Design Against Crime Research Centre.
Visiting service design practitioners from leading
agencies will share their professional experience
with the course participants. #SDS11 saw the
participations of designers from thinkpublic,
live|work, Claro Partners and Design Against
Crime as well as mentors who had previously
worked at Engine and Participle.

The course ended with a special Service Design
Summer Drinks 2011, which gave participants
the opportunity to interact and engage with
London wider service design community.
